Our story...

Owners Tim and Maria Sanchez are Oakland/Bay Area natives. Having roots from Puerto Rico and El Salvador lead them to fulfill one of their passions of mixing their love for coffee with art. Together Sanchez Contemporary and Tertulia Coffee opened it’s doors on July 2nd, 2016. Since then have continually grown with talented baristas, customers, artists, partners and truly is a family owned business.

Today the coffee shop and commercial art gallery serves as a place for the community to come together everyday.

our mission

Our mission is to be a safe and relaxing place to enjoy our product offerings from the coffee bar while also viewing the rotating art exhibits. Tertulia Coffee/Sanchez Contemporary was born out of our love for the arts and artists. Our goal is to support the Bay Area Chican@/Latin@ artists and other under represented artists. We offer a space where artists can exhibit their art in a professional gallery setting. A space to share their talent and creativity with the community. Art is legacy, it's what remains after we leave this earth. Art tells stories ... we see ourselves reflected in it. In it you find our beliefs, history, familia, convictions and our everyday lives.

We can’t wait for you to visit!

Story of El Jibaro

Learn about our signature house blend...

Our Story: El Jibaro Blend.

The name "jibaro" refers to a Puerto Rican small farmer, rural worker, or laborer, especially of mountainous regions. Which brings us to Victor Garcia Sr. also known as "Papi" to our family. He is the grandfather of Tim Sanchez (owner and founder of Tertulia Coffee). He was born and raised in Yauco, Puerto Rico and grew up working on the family coffee farm and later sugar cane fields. Victor, alongside his wife Georgina (referred to as "Mami"), have both been an inspiration to carry on our family legacy. Although they both are no longer with us we will forever have our memories and pay our respects to them. We knew our house blend needed to do just that. We hope the next time you sip on "El Jibaro" it fills you up with love! 🇵🇷
